It is with great sadness that we report the death of Steve ‘Beaver’ Reilly. Steve passed away on the 23 March 2019 after a long battle with cancer. His sons Aaron and Shaun were at his side as he passed away peacefully.
Steve had a long and proud history with Freshie, joining the club in the 1966/67 season, and then winning the Australian Junior Surfboat Championship in his first year of rowing at SouthPort in South Australia. He then backed that up winning at the, elusive double, Aussies once again under Freshie’s Legendary Sweep Brian ‘Woggles’ Mason, this time at North Cronulla in 1968!
He lived a full and very active life joining the Police Force as a cadet and serving with distinction for many years. He was also a great sportsman out of the surfboat. He was a NSW State CHS athletics Javelin champion, with a record throw which stood for many decades. Steve was also an accomplished and respected (and feared) footballer playing Rugby League for Manly and also many first grade games for his beloved South Sydney Rabittohs during the 1970’s!
Steve’s generosity and sponsorship with Surf Life Saving and surfboat rowing was greatly appreciated, donating many hundreds of thousands of dollars over his long association with our community.
He was loved and respected and will be sadly missed by all.
A memorial service will be held at Freshwater Surf Life Saving Club on Sunday 5th May from 11am to 2pm.
