Important information

for the 2020 / 2021 Season

We apologise for the delay in communicating our plans for the upcoming season.  Not only has it been a complicated process given the restrictions that have been imposed upon us as a result of Covid 19 but we have had to change our game plan multiple times to accommodate the changing times and regulations.

We have been in constant discussion with SNB Branch and Northern Beaches Council to ensure that we can achieve the most positive outcome for Freshwater Nippers this season.

We are pleased to announce that the season will go ahead and we will announce details around dates, times and logistics for actual Nipper sessions in the near future.

COVID-19

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NSW Government has imposed a number of obligations on the conduct of community sport. This includes the nipper programs run by surf clubs. There are also a range of NSW Health Department requirements and local council expectations which need to be taken into account.

Families intending to register for the Freshwater Nippers program this season therefore need to be aware of the following:

  • Nipper activities are likely to be significantly disrupted in order to ensure the club complies with relevant COVID obligations;
  • Council has indicated the maximum number of people on the beach at any one time, including those attending the nippers program, will be limited to 500;
  • Nipper registrations will be limited to families living within the Northern Beaches Council area. Exceptions to this restriction will be children whose parents are –
    – Patrolling members at Freshwater
    – Age managers, qualified water safety personnel, JAC Committee members or qualified carnival officials.
  • Each of the age groups from U6 to U14 will be capped in terms of numbers. Registrations will be accepted in order of receipt provided all necessary paperwork is provided and membership fees paid. Partially completed registrations will not retain priority over later applications which have been fully completed.
  • Registration fees will not be refunded in the event nipper activities are cancelled as a result of beach closures or the need to comply with any other restrictions arising from new Public Health Orders or decisions by Council. This includes fees paid using Active Kids Vouchers;
  • The opportunity for competition is likely to be significantly limited this season;
  • Separate sessions will be held to conduct the nipper program. Nippers and parents will be expected to leave the beach immediately the activities in their allotted time slot are completed. The U12 & U13 age groups will be conducted on Saturday afternoon;
  • Nipper activities will be dependent on parents being willing to undertake a range of COVID marshal related duties which will facilitate the conduct of the program by the Age Managers;
  • Entry to the surf club will be limited to authorised personnel only. The only exception will be entry to purchase merchandise from the club shop. This will apply irrespective of the weather conditions.

Key roles

Priority will be given across all age groups to Nippers who had parents fill key roles last season:

  • Patrol Members
  • JAC Members
  • Age Managers and Assistants
  • Proficient Water Safety Members
  • Proficient Carnival Officials

We outline below registration guidelines including a number cap on each age group.  There is also a prioritisation schedule as agreed by the Junior Activities Committee and Executive Committee.
